SOUP! (Saturday of Unified Purpose)

Ottawa Community sending aid to feed the starving....

Haiti:

January 2010 was when the devastating earthquake destroyed the medical, political and even emergency service infrastructure in Haiti. Haiti is still trying to rebuilt even to this day; some places have even become worse because of flooding, famine and disease. People are not just hungry--they are starving to death.

Colombia:

Colombia is geographically very diverse, and is subject to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The combinations of mountains, rivers and rain forests proves to be challenging in providing relief to more remote regions of the country. In December of 2010, heavy rain produced major flooding that affected over 2 million people, leaving many without homes or shelter. Numana concentrated relief efforts in the Choco region, which is in the northwest section of the country. Numana delivered food to Quibdo, La Dorada, Medellin, and other communities on the Atratro River.

Africa:

(CNN) -- Twelve million people are facing a hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa, and they are in desperate need of help. The United Nations declared a famine in parts of southern Somalia, calling for a widespread international response to end the suffering. Thousands of Somalis have been fleeing the country each week in search of food, water and shelter -- many of them walking for days in the sweltering sun toward refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia. Nearly half a million children are at risk of dying from malnutrition and disease.

The food we pack will go to which ever location it is deemed to be needed the most at that time.

SOUP for the Starving wants to help.

This site is the main information portal for a great humanitarian endeavor of the Ottawa community. With the intent to span all faiths, organizations, and ages for the sake of one common goal, we are committed to provide food for the starving. We will do this with the help of Numana, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) international hunger relief organization whose mission is to empower people to save the starving.

A Numana event is a festive hands-on opportunity to roll up your sleeves and feed the hungry. Children and adults of all ages enjoy assembling soy, beans, rice and vitamins into bags and preparing them for shipping. Participants are deeply changed by spending just a few hours to save starving people. In the past year, Numana has mobilized more than 124,000 volunteers from coast-to-coast and packaged and sent more than 22 million meals to disaster victims. Click here to learn more about this great organization.

Our Agenda

  • This will be Ottawa's second Numana event....brought back by popular demand! We had an awesome turn out at our last event and many people's packing time was cut short. Well Ottawa here is your chance to do it all over again!
  • We have
to raise at least $44,272 in funds in order to package and ship over 150,000 meals to be distributed directly to the hands of the starving people. At only 30 cents per meal, the ingredients, packaging, administration, and international shipping costs are covered.
  • April 14, 2012 is set as the date for our packaging event; 9-5 p.m. is the time frame. Armory is the location. This is a Saturday of Unified Purpose!
  • In conjunction with the this food packaging event we will also have a food drive to help stock food banks of Franklin County. So at any fundraising event we have we will also be taking food donations as well.

Matthew 25:34-40 (New Living Translation)

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ 37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!
